<description>I remember when The Islander came to our island. I was a child and having our new ferry sail past West Chop was a BIG event. Prior to this, all our travel to/from was on the steamers and this vessel seemed like a dream from the future, kind of Buck Rogers thing, that was such a present to we islanders. We knew immediately we would love it - just looking at it, we knew that - and we were right, we all fell in love with it. Being new at it, the first captains had a bit of trouble making smooth landings in the Woods Hole slip, and landing was also an event in which we all held our collective breaths, BRACES OURSELVES, and then cheered at the success of such a wonderfully smooth passage from Vineyard Haven to Woods Hole. To me, it seems like just yesterday when our ferry first arrived. I am so glad to know she is not to go to the ship breakers, but rather to traverse from Manhattan to Governors Island, and I know she will become much beloved on that passage also. I just know it.
