I’ve done a lot of these counted cross stitch maps of the Vineyard. Each one has been for a special person. This particular one, the 9th one I’ve done was for my daughter Patty for Christmas 2008. Imagine my surprise while packing things up recently to move, when I looked in a long forgotten box and found this done by a very special person in my life…

… my mother. She must have done this over 80 years ago and it is in amazingly good condition. Thank you mom for a beautiful surprise.

Yours is gorgeous, but Mom’s is precious….I love the guys chasing the whale. My own mother, born 1899, told of her father telling of in his youth out of Westport that “black fish” (small whales) would school up just outside the river and they would go after them in a boat — a dory — and harpoon them, but Grandpa Cornell was careful to specify these were only small whales, not the “real” ones. They would bring them home (in a dory!) and do the same process as the big whalers used with a home made try works, getting them mostly for oil but also for meat. Incredible when you think of how your ancestors lived — and did this as an unremarkable rather everyday process of life.
