Today is Chappy’s 8th birthday.

He’s in this puppy pile somewhere !

As you can see he was being Vineyardized as soon as we got him home.

Soooooooooooo cute.

His first trip to MV at age 10 months.

All grown up.

Chappy with his favorite person, his mom Deb.

Happy birthday Chappy… we love you.

Julie, a friend of my daughter Deb’s asked us if we’d like to dog sit for their two Labs, Silas and Balou.  Indeed we would and so Deb, her dog Chappy and I set out for MV.

No matter how many times I go to the Vineyard my heart skips a beat or two when I see the above sign and the rotary welcoming you to Cape Cod.

This was our first time sailing on the beautiful ferry, Island Home.

Seven miles and 45 minutes later we touched tire in Vineyard Haven.  We were about to start an Island adventure like none before.

Here is Deb surrounded by a happy, friendly threesome.  Chappy on the left, Balou in the front and Silas being petted.  We have never met nicer dogs, they are well behaved, sweet, gentle and loving, patient and fun. There wasn’t one moment that we didn’t enjoy being with them.  Oh, okay, maybe when Balou was trying so hard to tell us things and we just were too slow on the uptake… but generally speaking (or woofing) things went very, very well.

Except for the weather.  Two of the days we were there were wet… very, very wet.

This picture was taken from inside our dry car looking out at Edgartown Harbor.  Wet, wet, wet.  It was windy too.  And wet.

But there were times of no rain and actuall brilliant sunshine and so off on our walks in the woods we would venture.  The 4 leggeds were happy to be out and about sniffing, walking, and being together.

In all too short a time our dog sitting adventure came to an end and it was time to  head home.

Chappy is waiting to say goodbye to his new friends.  He had a great time with Silas and Balou.

The Island Home is waiting for us.

Setting tire in Woods Hole.  Back to reality.

This is Bradys NESW Bed & Breakfast in Oak Bluffs.  Besides graciously welcoming two-legged guests, Bradys welcomes four-legged guests with open arms/paws. This charming Victorian home has been in Bradys family since the 1920’s.

Meet Amie, and she’s the official greeter and happily showed us to our room.

Our dog Chappy quickly settled onto the window seat.

The views from our room on the second floor were stunning.

I love how the sun came in every morning and illuminated this corner.

The staircase leading downstairs.  It was a little tricky for Chappy’s paws but he mastered it in no time.

Bradys location is ideal.  He’s located on a quiet street a half block from the beach and less than a mile to the center of Oak Bluffs.

Staying at Bradys is like staying at the home of a friend.  There are charming displays of memorabilia in every room… and a story to go with almost everything.  Brady is a wealth of Vineyard information, he can guide you with what to do and see and what not to miss.  There are four rooms at Bradys.  The West room (pictured in this post) has its own bath.

Bradys NESW is a good place to escape from stress and the constant barrage of today’s wired world.  Read a book, watch a movie from Brady’s vast collection – listen to a CD of show tunes, jazz, folk, and classical selections – there’s a fireplace to curl up next to – there’s a  cable TV in the living room -  and a beautiful porch with comfy rocking chairs to relax on.   There are no phones in the room but I’ve been told there is wifi access.  If you’re looking to get away from it all this is the place for you.

We certainly enjoyed our stay there and will definitely return.

Bliss is being on the Vineyard and having a sunny window to lie in.  Ahhh.

My daughter Deb is a twin.  Her sister Susan was only with us for a few hours.

Katy (Katama) was Deb’s first Boykin Spaniel. She was our first dog to go on vacation with us, no big surprise that it was to MV.  Katy left us after 20 months and we feel that she’s now with Susan.

Chappy (Chappaquiddick) was Deb’s next Boykin Spaniel. He has been to MV seven times, so far.

We took lots of pictures of Chappy’s first trip to the Vineyard, especially on the beach and in the water. He really enjoyed splashing about and barking at waves. These pictures show a little of his fun at the beach.

And then there’s this picture:

Is this a double exposure !  Or is it Deb and Chappy with Susan and Katy ?   You be the judge.  Just let me say that my camera had never, until that day, taken a double exposure and has never done so since !!

Happy Halloween !!!

Hi, I’m Chappy and I just popped over to gram’s blog from my mom’s blog, www.chappysmom.com to tell you about my wonderful trip to MV in April. Actually, I posted here in January about pets on MV, it was so much fun that I’m back to guest post again.

Bradys in Oak Bluffs is where we stayed.

This is Amie, she is Brady’s dog and the official greeter for us four-legged guests.  She showed us right to our room and clued me in on the good things to sniff and check out.  She’s really nice.

Our room had a window seat, I wasn’t sure what that was although I’ve heard mom say time and time again that she’d love to have one.  Now I know why, they’re wonderful.. I mean really, a big window to look out of and the sun pouring in to bask in… what more (except food) could a guy ask for.  Once in awhile I actually shared it with mom… see how happy she looks… I do too.

The first morning we were there we went for a walk after breakfast.  The beach and the water look so pretty but it was too cold to dip my paws in the water.  I met another dog friend, she had only been with her adopted mom a few days and was getting used to her new home… she was nice.

Then we went to the MV Fiber Farm festival.  I had never seen sheep and goats before and I just didn’t know what to make of them.  They sure didn’t smell like any animals I ever met before.  I was perplexed and they seemed to be too.  “Hey, you lookin at me!”  Yup, they sure were, they kept a close eye on mom and me, wherever we moved to they followed us… it was like a game after awhile.

I got to meet two more dogs… Fritz, a sheltie and also a brown spaniel.

It was fun getting to know them and we played each time we saw each other.

This is mom and me relaxing a little bit.  She’s of course knitting and I’m fighting to keep my eyes open.  I lost..teehee.  It was a really, really full and fun day.   But the fun wasn’t over because the next day..

… we went to visit Susan and Patrick at the farm and see the baby goats that weren’t at the festival.

Look at me !  I’m sniffing a goats behind !!  I can’t believe it either.

They’re so cute and smaller then I am, but not for long.  They were so friendly, they came right up to us and they let mom and gram pet them…

… mom even KISSED one !

This is mom and me sitting in the Campground while gram takes a few pictures.  We were all happily tired.

We did manage to visit a few new people while we were on MV and of course we ate some good food too.  I love eating in mom’s car which we call Cafe Volvo. I always get some of what mom and gram are eating and that makes me very happy especially when they have chicken… or donuts… or hamburgers… or anything.

Thank you gram for letting me visit your blog… this is Chappy signing off.

On Sunday, the day after the festival we were invited by Susan and Patrick to visit the farm and see the babies who were too young to be at the festival.  Oooooooooohhhhhhh, just look at these sweet baby faces.

The moms kept an eye on us, especially on Chappy, but let the kids come and sniff at us and let us pet and snuzzle them.

Oregano is Logan’s favorite and it looks like the feeling is mutual.

Susan and the kids.

And so there you have it, just a few of the babies born so far this year.  All the names for these cuties were herbs and spices.  Among them, Basil, Chive, Sage, twin girls named Saffron & Sassafras, Cilantro, Tarragon, boy and girl twins named Rosemary & Oregano, Juniper, and dear sweet sprig of Parsley who we miss.  (If I forgot anyone I’m really, really sorry).

Who better then  Chappy ourBoykin Spaniel, to tell you about MV with  pets.   Take it away Chappy.

Hi, this is me in the car going to Martha’s Vineyard.  I know I look all relaxed and eager to get there but in reality I’m a nervous mess.  I don’t like car rides, especially the 1000 hours it takes to get there from NJ.  OK, maybe not 1000, more like 6 but in dog hours it could be 1000.

Once we arrive at the Island Inn I can stretch my legs, have a bite to eat and get settled in.

See, this is me very, very settled in… in fact I’m so settled I’m almost asleep.

The Island Inn is a great place to stay with your people… the rooms vary in sizes from 1 or 2 bedrooms to townhouse suites,  they also have a 2 bedroom cottage.  All the accommodations have kitchenettes in them… I love that, I think it’s very important to always have food nearby.   The people there have their own dogs who help us 4 legged guests check in.  Everyone is super friendly and nice.  We like it there a lot.

I have to say that at first I thought the dogs and kids were a little aloof and then my mom explained to me that this is something called a sculpture.  Wow, what a relief that was, I mean there wasn’t any scent I could pick up and it freaked me out.

I love walking around on the Vineyard, the scenery is so pretty… like here in Edgartown near the lighthouse.  Even though I can’t see all the colors I’m still amazed at the beauty of Martha’s Vineyard.

And the shopping… the Vineyard is so dog friendly that I’m allowed just about everywhere.  There are lots of good stores for dogs… I think my favorite one is Good Dog Goods in Oak Bluffs.   The owner Kerry Scott and all her people who work there are so nice.  They get right down on the floor and play with me,  and offer me treats… I like that in a person.  We always bring bags of treats home to NJ with us… I like that too.  And I like this sticker.

The Black Dog is another good place to go … they have a great selection of biscuits and leashes etc… oh and their BD tee shirts are especially popular with people.

So let’s see… I’ve mentioned where we like to stay… and where I like to shop… and how dog friendly MV is… all that’s left is for you to experience MV yourself.   Here’s more MV pet information.

This is me on the way home… I am so totally and happily exhaustatated that I’m actually sleeping.

This is Katy (Katama) our Boykin Spaniel, she was our first dog to go to Martha’s Vineyard… actually our first dog to ever go on a vacation with us.  Here she is on the Islander looking happy and eager to get on with her adventures.

She enjoyed her first dip in the ocean…  running and barking and trying to catch an elusive wave or two.

At Katama/South Beach, the place she was named for  she was a little unsure of the waves so she mostly romped along side of them.

A quiet morning at Edgartown lighthouse was nice after all the beach going, shopping and meeting people.  Unfortunately it was Katy’s one and only trip to MV… a year later she was hit by a car and died at only 20 months old.  She was a sweetheart and we miss her and still love her.

And then along came…

Chappy (Chappaquiddick) our second Boykin Spaniel and our first boy dog.  His first vacation at age 10 months was of course to MV.   He of course loves the beach too.

And Sengekontacket pond which is a little calmer then the ocean.

Relaxing at Vineyard Haven harbor is fun too… watching the ferries arriving and leaving and sometimes meeting an Island dog to chat with. This by the way is his mom’s favorite picture of him.

Chappy had to visit the place he was named after too so here he is with his mom on Chappaquiddick.  Chappy has made seven trips so far to Martha’s Vineyard and looks forward to many more.

Not many places accept pets but the Island Inn does and it’s a great place to stay with or without your pet.   Chappy says a few of his favorite places are - Good Dog Goods in Oak Bluffs… the treats there are wonderful (especially the cheese ones and the peanut butter ones)  and the people always remember him and sometimes get down on the floor to play with him.   He also recommends the Black Dog for their dog biscuits… he says they’re droolicious.

Martha’s Vineyard is very pet friendly.   Just about any store will happily welcome your pet in to browse and be fawned over.

There are a few places on MV that accommodate pets and in my opinion the best one is the Island Inn .  They have different sized rooms from typical motel size to 2 and 3 bedroom suites.   I believe they stop accepting pets the end of May but start again in Sep… that rule might have changed so checking with the management is a good idea.

In a separate post I will touch upon the part of traveling with a pet to MV that the pet likes best…… food & treats and where to find them.  I will be interviewing our dog Chappy for this post as he is after all the pet expert.
